These are the games you open while something is loading, while the kettle boils, or in the ninety seconds before a meeting starts. Every one of them can be finished, or abandoned without guilt, in the time it takes a coffee to go cold.

Short does not mean shallow

A short game has to earn your attention immediately, because it has no second act to fall back on. That is a harder design problem than it looks, and the games that solve it tend to be the ones people come back to for years. A match 3 board gives you a legal move on the first screen. A memory grid explains itself in four seconds and no instructions. A typing test tells you your score before you have decided whether you cared.

Word games are the backbone here. They start instantly, they pause cleanly, and nothing is lost if you close the tab.

Match 3 is the other half. It asks almost nothing of you and gives back a steady rhythm, which is exactly the point on a bad afternoon.

Memory and typing round it out. Both are honest about what they are: a small measurable thing you can do slightly better than you did yesterday.

If five minutes turns into fifty
