What thinking games actually do

The honest answer is that no browser game is going to raise your IQ, and anyone selling you that is selling you something. What these games do is narrower and more useful: they give a restless mind somewhere to go for twenty minutes. A crossword makes you hold six half-guesses in your head at once. A sudoku grid makes you prove a thing is impossible before you can prove another thing is true. A quiz round tells you, immediately and without sympathy, which corners of your own memory have gone soft.

Where to start

If you want something with a definite finish, take a sudoku or a puzzle. Both end. You know when you have won.

If you would rather be tested than solve, trivia and quiz games move faster and forgive more. A wrong answer costs you a point, not the whole board.

If you want the hardest thing here, it is the crossword. A good crossword clue is a small piece of writing that means two things at once, and getting it is a better feeling than any of the animations the rest of these games throw at you.

When this is not the mood
